Fibre-Optic Amplifiers

Telecommunications networks deploying fibre-optic cable technology use light rather than electricity to transmit a signal. These networks need to amplify the light signal which otherwise attenuates (decreases) over distance. No single conventional amplifier can operate over all the optical wavelength bands used in normal fibre-optic communication: at best different amplifiers operating in different bands are needed.

A quantum dot amplifier will operate with uniform gain over the complete operating optical wavelength spectrum. This will allow significantly more capacity to be utilised in the existing cable – ideal for applications using both Coarse and Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing systems and emerging Fibre To The Premise (FTTP) applications such as long backhaul Gigabit Passive Optical Networks (GPON).
