Fibre-Optic Amplifiers

One of the constraints associated with telecommunications networks deploying fibre-optic cable technology, is that imposed by the need to optically amplify light travelling down a fibre-optic cable as distance and power requirements dictate. No single conventional amplifier can operate over the conventional operating windows in normal fibre: at best different amplifiers operating in different bands are needed.

A single quantum dot amplifier will operate with uniform gain over the complete spectrum. This will allow significantly more capacity to be utilised in the existing cable – ideal for applications using both Coarse and Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing systems.

Prototype devices will be available Q2 2006 and Trackdale would welcome module and systems supply companies who would like to participate in trials.
